If produce with a story is what you’re into, you might want to dip into Extra Virgin Olive Oil from Calabria and a tale that began in the 1940s with the opening of the Mele family’s cinema in Pizzo, Italy.
Stocked on the Pavilion shelves is not just the silkiest, mountain-side olive oil of Calabria, it’s a story of a flourishing arts project that has roots in a small, provincial town cinema.
Giuseppe Mele provides us with the finest extra virgin olive oil of southern Italy – roaming the mountainous regions outside of Pizzo to befriend local olive oil suppliers and source the glossiest oil to bring a true flavour of the Mediterranean to London. While his business on Borough Market booms, this trader’s true passion lies in the long abandoned cinema building his grandfather, Francesco Mele, founded over half a century ago.
The dramatic space that sits high on a hillside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea fell into disrepair in the nineties, only to be revived twenty years later by Giuseppe – the man behind our olive oil.
Slowly but surely, the profits from Mele’s fine Calabrian oil are bringing the Cinema Mele back to its former glory. Hosting arts residencies, live music and performance art is the space’s new calling and every bottle of Giuseppe’s olive oil that’s sold pours a little extra life into this forgotten slice of Calabrian cultural history.
Follow Giuseppe's journey here and pop into any Pavilion store for your own bottle of olive oil. All proceeds go to supporting the Cinema Mele.
